Another excellent take. Composition is great especially the branches all pointing at the subject. DOF is great too. Snowbound meaning that this heron isn't supposed to be there?? That's pretty sad I hope he makes it through the winter.

@Colour blind: Hi Kelly- Answered your's and Duncan's in the same breath, so check there for the long answer.
Still awaiting your birds, while enjoying the night series.
Hey matt. playing catch up after a wee hiatus and it's good to see you've been carrying on in fine form as always. I dont know too much about herons, do they migrate? We have them here but now I think about it, I've not seen one all winter. Hope he's ok.

@Duncan Galbraith: AND @ Kelly- Thanks for the comments. I am particularly flattered that you are more concerned with the subject than the image itself. It's a crack in the fourth wall that I've been eagerly awaiting. The title is an allusion to the composition. (Plus, if I had to call it "Heron # X", I'd have to dig through this and other archives to find the value of X.)
This heron is local to a nearby wetland, and winters over with several others. Snow is rare in the Portland metro area, as are frozen bogs. The bog melted within days, and was more of an inconvenience than a threat to the wildlife.
Though herons are not technically migratory in this area of the world, they do have specific ranges, which expand during the summer months, based on the availability of food. It would not surprise me if your Japanese birds behaved in a similar fashion.
Matt!
